Meet Bill White

Bill White was elected as DuPage County Auditor in November 2020 and his term in office began December 1, 2020. As of December 2020, Bill had practiced law for decades and had served within local government, in numerous capacities, also for decades. Bill knew he was very strong in two of the four domains relevant to the duties of County Auditor, namely law and governance. Bill set about improving himself in the other domains.
Since December 2020 Bill earned an Advanced Accounting Certificate from the College of DuPage and is now eligible to take the CPA exam. Bill has also enrolled at Rutgers Business School and is pursuing a Masters of Accountancy in governmental accounting. Bill enrolled at Rutgers after he realized that traditional CPA curriculum does not sufficiently cover the unique characteristics of governmental accounting, in contrast to private sector accounting.
Bill has also been awarded the professional designation "Certified Internal Auditor” by the Institute of Internal Auditors. The CIA designation is the highest available for the practice of internal auditing. Bill’s local government experience and legal experience already provided a solid foundation in the domain of operations however, attaining the CIA designation significantly improved Bill’s understanding of the mission, vision and purpose of internal auditing.
Bill is proud to be a life-long learner and this trait will be invaluable as Bill pursues his long-term strategic goal of guiding the Office of the DuPage County Auditor towards successful completion of peer review. Successful peer review would be a crowning achievement for Bill and would leave a lasting legacy.
A More Traditional Biography
Decades of Public Service: Prior to being elected County Auditor, Bill was involved with local governments for decades. Most recently Bill was an elected commissioner on the Downers Grove Village Council and was chosen as Mayor pro tem. Prior to that, Bill was an elected member of the District 99 school board (Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South High Schools) and was chosen to serve as School Board President for a portion of his term. Bill also served as Chair of the Downers Grove Zoning Board of Appeals after serving as a member of that Board. He also served on the Downers Grove Zoning Commission. Before moving to Downers Grove, Bill served on the Zoning Board of Appeals for the Village of Woodridge.
In 2010-2011, Bill served as chair of citizen’s committee tasked with overseeing a significant revision of the award winning Downers Grove Comprehensive Plan.
Professional career: After graduating law school, Bill joined a law practice founded by his mother, Frances J. White. Eventually, the practice became “White and White” with Frances as the senior partner. The law practice has always been located in Downers Grove.
Education: Bill graduated high school from Downers Grove South. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago and his law degree from Loyola University of Chicago. Bill completed coursework at DePaul University related to a Masters of Law in Taxation (but decided he did not enjoy tax law). Bill has been awarded an Advanced Accounting Certificate from the College of DuPage and is currently enrolled at Rutgers University pursuing a Master of Accountancy in Governmental Accounting.
Auditor related Professional Activities: Bill has received professional designation as a Certified Internal Auditor from the Institute of Internal Auditors and currently serves as Advocacy Chair for the Chicago West Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors. Bill currently serves as Vice President for Education and Outreach for the Illinois Association of County Auditors.
Personal: Bill and his wife Karen have been married for 34 years and they reside in Downers Grove. Bill and Karen have two adult children.
